Now let’s talk about boudoir photography.

It’s been a minute since I’ve had a shoot centered entirely around boudoir. Over the years, my focus has shifted as I’ve built other parts of my business—but every time I return to boudoir, I’m instantly reminded why I fell in love with it in the first place. There’s something about it that feels deeply personal, creatively challenging, and incredibly rewarding.

Today, I want to take you on a small trip down memory lane—back to one of the very first boudoir sessions I ever photographed.

I remember being nervous. Boudoir is unlike any other type of photography. You’re not just capturing images—you’re holding space for vulnerability, confidence, and trust. Especially early on, I felt the weight of wanting to do it right. I wanted to create something that felt empowering rather than performative, intentional rather than staged.

From the very beginning, my goal was to move away from the traditional “male gaze” and instead showcase beauty the way women see and feel it themselves. I’ll be honest—I didn’t get everything perfect that first time. But that session taught me a few lessons that still guide the way I approach boudoir photography today.

Lesson #1: Always Have a Posing Plan

Whether it’s written down or mentally mapped out, having a posing plan is essential. Your client is in a vulnerable state—often wearing very little—and the last thing they need is uncertainty from the person behind the camera.

A confident photographer sets the tone for the entire session. When you guide with intention and move through poses smoothly, it helps break initial tension and allows your client to relax into the experience. A consistent posing flow builds trust, keeps momentum, and helps your subject feel supported and empowered from start to finish.

Lesson #2: Confirm Posing Boundaries in Advance

Boudoir means different things to different people. For some, it’s soft and intimate. For others, it’s bold and daring. That’s why clear communication before the session is absolutely key.

I always take the time to understand what my client is—and isn’t—comfortable with. From there, I tailor poses to their comfort level, body type, and personality. One thing I tell every single client is this: boudoir is not about having a “perfect” body. It’s about celebrating your body exactly as it is.

All you need is a little confidence and a little courage—I’ll take care of the rest.

Lesson #3: Never Post Without Permission

As photographers, sharing our work is how we grow—but with boudoir photography, sensitivity is everything. Consent doesn’t stop at the session itself.

Always discuss image sharing ahead of time. Be clear about where photos may appear, and never post anything without explicit approval. Respecting your client’s boundaries builds trust and professionalism—and those things matter far more than likes or engagement.

That first boudoir shoot will always stay with me. It shaped how I photograph, how I communicate, and how seriously I take the responsibility that comes with this kind of work.
